Founded in nineteen eighty-eight, the first MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship was open to the public, consisting of modified versions of road bike models! What drew in the crowds early was that the formula allowed for machines with 1000cc V-twin engines to go up against 750cc four cylinder engines, meaning that various manufacturers of the two types of engines had the actual chance to go against each other. When 1000CC V-twin engines were introduced, it soon became apparent that this suited the WorldSBK formula much more, with many companies opting to create vehicles of this form! With superbikes having derived from standard production models, the number of competing motorcycle manufacturers stands at a surprisingly small number. The competing manufacturers are Aprilia, BMW Motorrad, Ducati, Honda, Kawasaki and Suzuki, while Benelli, Bimota, MV Agusta, Petronas and Yamaha have all dropped out of the competition over the years, leaving importance lying with the riders and the model of bike!
Needless to say, the SBK World Championship has gained popularity with much of the world, with many riders in the championship going on to race in the MotoGP! While riders enter from all over the world, the SBK can boast some of the biggest audiences of Italy, due to the inclusion of Ducati, while the UK sees superbike racing as the most popular form of motorcycle racing!
