Dave Matthews' Three-piece Beginnings

Formed in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1991, the original line-up consisted of Dave Matthews, Carter Beauford and LeRoi Moore, it's hard to imagine that the band almost never-were! After extensive convincing from a friend, a very reserved David John Matthews simply wrote songs, without much thoughts of recording. Of course, in order to record the songwriter properly, he needed a band, and upon more convincing reluctantly sought out other musicians to help him. First Matthew’s approached Beauford, a local drummer who’d played in numerous bands, and at the time could be found playing on a jazz show on BET (Black Entertainment Television). Matthew’s next recruitment came in the form of Moore, whose saxophone talent had seen him rise as a prominent jazz musician. Matthews was once quoted on saying of the time, “the reason I went to Carter was not because I needed a drummer, but because I thought he was the baddest thing I’d ever seen and LeRoi, it wasn’t because I desperately wanted a saxophone, it was because this guy just blew my mind. At this jazz place I used to bartend at, I would just sit back and watch him. I would be serving the musicians fat whiskeys and they’d be getting more and more hosed, but no matter how much, he used to still blow my mine. And it was the sense that everyone played from their heart. And when we got together and they asked, ‘What do you want the music to sound like?’ I said ‘I know this is a song I wrote and I like what you guys play, so I want you to play the way you react to my song.’”. As you can see, the band formed due to a simple mutual love of music and talent.

Of course, it wasn't so simple either. Despite the harmony between the three, the band’s limited instrumental range was found lacking, and even Matthews admitting “we were awful. Not just kind of bad, I mean heinously bad.” In need of a bassist, and under the recommendation of Charlotteville’s prominent jazz figure John D’earth, the band enlisted the help of 15-year-old Stefan Lessard, who had actually been training under D’earth! Harmonica/Keyboard player, and Matthews’ fellow bartender, Peter Griesar, also joined the band for the first three years! However, the final addition came in the form of violinist Boyd Tinsley, when in 1992 the band sought out a fiddle sound for track “Tripping Billies”, a friend of Moore, Tinsley clicked with the band to the point that he too became a permanent fixture!

Tragedy Strikes

In 2008, tragedy struck when LeRoi Moore died during a quad bike accident on his farm, just outside Charlottesville. After a grass covered ditch caused the quad to flip and partially land on Moore, he broke several ribs and punctured a lung. Unfortunately, Moore was hospitalised and re-hospitalised upon release, and eventually died from the pneumonia caused from all of the complications of his accident. Matthews said of Moore “Roi loved people, but he had the hardest time loving himself, and that was the most difficult thing about being his friend for me, watching him torture himself. He was a good soul, but he was a tortured soul. But he loved his family and he loved his friends. He was finding himself, finding the light inside himself, and it was shining more than it had for a very long time.”

Dying only 3 months before Moore was set to marry his longtime love, Lisa Beane, Matthews said “I believe her unwavering love for him and her willingness to stand in front of him, as he was reluctant to love himself, and insisted on it, caused him to eventually see the light. It was so bright, that we could all see it so much all of the time, when he would put that horn in his mouth and make the most astonishingly honest music that could knock you over, and it would sink right in the middle of you.” Moore was replaced by Jeff Coffin for the remainder of the tour, and since than, Coffin too has became a permanent fixture in the Dave Matthews Band roster.

With such a rich history, and huge discography, don’t miss out on one of the most under-rated bands to play either side of the equator!
