Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Kanye West’s demonstrated his passion for the arts early in his life, when he began writing poetry at the age of five! With his mother recalling West’s love of drawing and music occurring in the third grade, there was no doubt to Kanye West’s developing affinity for the Hip Hop scene. With Atlanta having been dubbed “Hip Hop’s center of gravity” by the New York Times, the city can lay claim to raising such hip hop legends as Ludacris, B.o.B, Cee Lo Green, Lil Jon, OutKast and Usher to just name a few! Although at the age of three West’s parents divorced, and so Kanye moved to Chicago, Illinois with his mother, West’s connection to Atlanta certainly shone through at an early age! Although he started rapping in the third grade, he began making music compositions in the seventh grade, and selling them to other artists! After convincing his mother to pay for time in a recording studio, West recorded his first rap song “Green Eggs and Ham”, and over time he eventually he crossed paths with producer/DJ No I.D. Quickly becoming fast friends with No I.D., the DJ soon became West’s mentor and taught him how to sample and program beats after receiving his first sampler and fifteen! With the little rapper all grown up, it’s fair to say that he’s certainly done well for himself! So don’t forget to buy your Kanye West tickets!
Graduating from West Aurora High School, West received a scholarship to attend Chicago’s American Academy of Art taking painting classes. Shortly after however, West transferred to the Chicago State University, majoring in English. After it became apparent that it would be difficult to pursue academia as well as a music career, West dropped out of college at the age of twenty, to pursue his career in music full-time! Suffice to say this initially displeased his mother, who was actually a professor at the university he dropped out of! She later went on to say “It was drummed into my head that college is the ticket to a good life... but some career goals don’t require college. For Kanye to make an album called College Dropout it was more about having the guts to embrace who you are, rather than following the path society has carved out for you.”
Following the success of College Dropout, Kanye West sought out a new sound after his trademark use of sped up samples began to saturate the music scene, not due to his part but more because of the numerous producers copying his technique! A year later, West released his sophomore venture Late Registration, an album West admitted was inspired by Brit triphop band Portishead’s live album, Roseland NYC Live which was performed with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra! The use of string arrangements had long since been a desire of West’s but due to budgetry constraints he could never afford them for the debut album, but with money now coming in exponentially, the hip hop artist promptly infused Late Registration with a number of string arrangement layers and even enlisted the help of film composer Jon Brion, drastically altering the album’s musical direction! (So don’t forget, with Kanye West now promoting his latest album buy your Kanye West tickets and prepare yourself for a night you won’t forget) The album also featured a number of collaborative guests, including Maroon 5’s Adam Levine, Brandy, Jamie Foxx, Lupe Fiasco and Jay-Z all make appearances on the album, with West hand picking the guest collaborations! Many of Late Registration’s top tracks come from these collaborative artists, with “Heard ‘Em Say”, “Touch the Sky”, Gold Digger” and “Diamonds from Sierra Leone (Remix)” all becoming classic hits from the rapping superstar! Critics quickly praised the new album, with rave reviews and impressive accolades! While NME wrote about the album “Late Registration is a solid set. And by freshening up his style without entirely abandoning it, West still has the rest of the rap world playing catch-up.”!
Of course it wasn’t all great news for the successful rapper, as a number of controversies began to crop up surrounding West. For example in the two thousand and four American Music Awards, West was reported to have stormed out, after losing the category for Best New Artist. However this proved to be a small-scale incident after his comments about the Hurricane Katrina saw him face up against the American government itself! During an NBC broadcast of “A Concert for Hurricane Relief”, West featured as a prominent speaker for the concert. Presenting alongside actor Mike Myers, West quickly began to deviate from the script, and in doing so stated that now-former (and equally controversial) President Bush “doesn’t care about black people.” Splitting an entire nation down the middle, his comment’s caused a mix reaction with President Bush labelling it one of the most “disgusting moments” in his presidency. The controversy was furthered the following year, when Rolling Stones portrayed a cover of Kanye West wearing a crown of thorns! Suffice to say, whether you love him or hate him, the talent of this phenomenal rapper cannot be dismissed and his music itself proves his worth!
Even in one of his albums, Yeezus, has had critics’ heads reeling, with West proving that his sheer level of talent can in fact overrule all of his misgivings! A completely minimalist work from the off, the album doesn’t feature any album artwork whatsoever, a clear CD Jewel case, with nought but a strip red tape and sample credits. A much darker departure from previous works, the album’s unconventional samples and elements of Chicago drill, dancehall, acid house and industrial music all combine to make an album that critics have hailed to be West’s best work yet! Of course critics are indeed only half the battle, and public reaction proved mixed at best. Leaking on the internet four days prior to release, Yeezus debuted at number one, selling over three hundred and twenty thousand copies however sales diminished soon after! Featuring production from a number of high profile artists including producing legend Rick Ruben, and Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk it’s no wonder the album proves so sonically pleasing to critics!
